Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, also known as ALL. This is a form of Leukemia that primarily afflicts children but can also occur in adults of all ages. It is a dysfunction of the development of the body's immune cell called the White Blood Cell in it's early maturation process. The abnormal "lymphoblasts" reproduce and cause widespread organ dysfunction and failure. The chemotherapy agents that fight the abnormal neoplastic process can also be toxic and harmful to the body. The specialists that use these agents have to carefully titrate the toxic effect on the Lymphoblasts while defending the vital organs of the body which is a very very difficult process. Children have responded well to treatment protocols and it is common to see up to a 90% cure rate with children. In the adult population, the cure rates are lower, but with new aggressive clinical trials, such as the one ongoing at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and associated hospitals, better cure rates have been achieved. The data on these trials which are still in their infancy, are proving to be promising. With help from private and public funding, we hope that the dedicated professionals who have made it their career goal to end Adult Leukemia, will successfully find the cure.
